Scary Nighttime Dave

Dave can be a fearsome cat when he needs to be. He will especially be more likely to fall on the fight side of the "fight or flight" equation when he thinks his home is potentially under attack. Jack will probably run away and hide underneath the bed, but if Dave hears the doorbell, or hears the door handle rattlin', he will go right up to that door and growl at it.

Guest Appearance: Blue, Volume IV

Blue, despite what his name implies, is not actually a blue dog. In fact, that would be kind of silly. He possesses more of a grey coat of fur, and sometimes it can even be shiny.

He will also not appreciate it if you attempt to imply that he was named after, or has any relation to, the pooch in the once-popular children's television show Blue's Clues. Don't even mention it to Blue, or he might bite your shoelaces.

RocketDave, Volume VII

RocketDave made his long-awaited reappearance today, forming an impressive, slightly upward-pointing nozzle. It definitely looks like Dave is ready for liftoff, although it will be more of a horizontal flight-path than vertical. Fortunately, Dave has enough power in his loins to launch himself with enough force so that he will be able to a sustain a good trajectory towards whatever his destination is this time.

I'm not the man they think I am at home! Oh no no no, I'm a Rocket Man!

Follow The Dafe on Twitter

If you are interested in seeing gems like this, you should follow Dave on Twitter.

Action Jackson

While Dave is known to spend a lot of his time investigating things around his home, Jack can also be active in this area. Sometimes he investigates invading bugs, or drafts of wind, or the blinds on the window. Other times he investigates Dave and whatever shenanigans he is pulling off at the moment. Other times still, Jack kicks Dave off of a napping spot so Jack can investigate its softness. You can see the aftermath of one such occurrence here.

When he is in this mode, Jack thinks of himself as Action Jackson.

Guest Appearance: Goldie, Volume III

Goldie, a friend of Dave's, is a pretty smart cat. Here you can see him taking a break from studying for a quick nap. Goldie does not spend as much time napping as Dave does. If Goldie was able to spend some time with Dave, Dave could teach Goldie some great napping strategies. Even as a relative novice, though, Goldie has already perfected a few key strategies. As you can see here, he has developed a very good version of The Conch.

Dave Asks

Dave is an intellectual at heart. His lifelong efforts at creating new napping strategies are all about developing new knowledge for society and the world. Dave's passion for creative napping is driven by the same root cause as his love for investigating. That cause is Dave's curiosity. But he is interested in much more than just napping, investigating, and looking out the window. He has many other interests. That is why Dave has insisted on a new series, where he gets to ask questions of his audience. They will range from philosophical to scientific to artistic.

Dave's first question is, "Would you rather eat at least one taco every day for the rest of your life, or never eat another taco again?"

One of Dave's favorite napping locations

Dave is willing to nap on just about anything. It's a good thing he isn't allowed outside, because one can easily imagine Dave napping on all sorts of inappropriate and dangerous things. Can't you picture Dave napping on an old tractor, or on the roof of a house? That wouldn't be safe. But even though Dave will nap anywhere, he still has his favorite spots. Below, you can see one of those spots. Dave thinks it is a good way to keep warm.

Guest Appearance: Goldie, Volume II

Goldie is generally a pretty reserved cat, but like his colleagues Dave and Blue, he does have some propensity for goofy behavior. With even more flexibility than Dave has, Goldie can get himself into some pretty weird positions. Sometimes he wants to stretch, but sometimes he just needs more variety in life. Unlike Dave and most of the other cool cats to appear on The Dafe, Goldie lives in a one-cat residence, so he has to entertain himself a lot of the time.

The Conch, Volume VIII

One of Dave's favorite uses of The Conch technique is pressing his face and feet against the same surface. This provides an extra degree of comfort to Dave, because in addition to having the whole left side of his body resting on a soft, comfortable surface, he can also have his face and feet resting on another soft surface. What more could Dave want?

CSI: Dave, Volume XII

The cat carrier has been brought out from the closet a few times since Dave and Jack moved into their new home, and each time, Dave's reaction has been the same. He immediately puts his detective hat on, joined by his assistant investigator, Jack. Dave wants to know as soon as possible if he will be taking a road trip, or even a trip by air, or even by sea! He wants time to prepare himself for adventure. Jack approaches the situation more mare warily. He does not even like when the doors of his home are open, and certainly has no desire to go on road trips.

Guest Appearance: Blue, Volume III

Blue is not a boastful dog. He doesn't think he is the king of the world, even though it might look like it in this photo. Blue is playful, has a lot of personality, and gets along well in modern society. But he also retains some of the characteristics of his ancestors. He is a sheep dog at heart, and he likes to shepherd his herd. That includes protecting his herd from any threats, such as teenagers riding bikes, or people wearing certain types of shoes. He is a good shepherd.

Like Clockwork

Dave is a creature of habit. There are certain things he does every day. For example, whenever food is being prepared in Dave's home, he visits the kitchen. If you start making some macaroni and cheese, or lasagna, or tomato soup, or what have you, Dave will come visit you. Sometimes he will make noises at you. Sometimes he will just stare at you. He doesn't ever get food out of these visits, but Dave loves food so much that he wants to be around it even when it's not for him. Plus, there's always a chance that this could be the time that he gets to eat it.

Of course, as we well know, Dave has no compunction about jumping onto the kitchen counter when the opportunity arises. He knows he's not supposed to be up there, though, so he doesn't do it when others are there to see him.

CSI: Dave, Volume XI

Even though Dave has been confined to a comfortable but restricted indoor space for the last year or so, he has not lost his will to investigate. He thinks there is always more to be found. That's why you can often find him peeking behind the same curtains and underneath the same pieces of furniture he has already investigated dozens of times.

Although Dave knows he is a great investigator, rivaled only by the likes of Sherlock Holmes and Philip Marlowe, Dave also knows that he might have missed a clue the first time he looked somewhere, and he doesn't want to let hubris prevent him from learning something new. That's why he is snooping on the bathtub here, even though he has investigated it many times before. He knows that new circumstances might have altered the bathtub in some way, and he wants to know about anything unusual.
