Perched

Even in the summer, when the windows come between Dave and the great outdoors, Dave spends time peering outside from his perch. During this time, when the weather is vomitous, he sits and ponders how grateful he is to no longer be on the mean streets of Iowa, where temperatures can often exceed 100 degrees.

Spotting a Threat

If you ever harbored any doubt as to whether it would be a bright idea to startle The Dafe, this photograph should convince you otherwise. Many hours per day, Dave sits warily, scanning the horizon and watching for any potential threats. True, sometimes this means false alarms, but Dave would much prefer 100 false alarms to one unexpected threat.

After all, you never know who might come after you

Scary Nighttime Dave

Dave can be a fearsome cat when he needs to be. He will especially be more likely to fall on the fight side of the "fight or flight" equation when he thinks his home is potentially under attack. Jack will probably run away and hide underneath the bed, but if Dave hears the doorbell, or hears the door handle rattlin', he will go right up to that door and growl at it.

CSI: Dave, Volume VII

Constant vigilance! That is Dave's motto. Even when he is taking a nap, he can put on his detective hat in no time. If someone thinks they can sneak something past Dave just because he appears to be taking a nap, that person is sorely mistaken. No matter how much Dave loves to take a nap, he does not often rest easily. He has just seen too much, especially while growing up on the mean streets of Iowa. Some cats never see anything more interesting than a particularly loud dishwasher, or a leaking toilet, but Dave is not one of those cats. While those cats might sleep soundly, with no worries at all, Dave is forever alert.

CSI: Dave, Volume VI

As you might remember, Dave really gets stimulated when things are happening around him. Here you can see a picture of Dave when he recently had some unexpected visitors. Dave really enjoys unexpected visitors, which, as you might also remember, is most of the time that he has visitors. One thing Dave does when he has visitors is put his detective cap on. We're speaking figuratively here, because Dave doesn't have any caps, but he figuratively puts his detective cap on and investigates who the visitor is, why they have entered his home, and what, if any, danger they present. Being a good defender of the home requires constant vigilance if you ask Dave. That's why he investigates every visitor thoroughly. He even used to include an investigation of whether visitors had brought any food, but he has sadly learned that visitors rarely bring him food, so he doesn't investigate this any more. After all, he doesn't want to get his hopes up.

The Dafe at the window

Look at this Dave. The way he looks out that window is just so intense. He does this any time something is going on outside, and frequently does so just to be prepared in case something does happen. Whether it's the mailman walking by, children making loud noises, or younger gentlemen enjoying illegal substances on the sidewalk in front of Dave's home, Dave prefers to keep an eye on things. They way he sees it, you never know when something life-changing is going to happen, so it's best to keep an eye on things.

Looking out the window

Of all of Dave's many hobbies, looking out the window is definitely one of his favorites. Despite spending his days indoors, he knows from experience that many important events take place outside. He watches leaves fall, investigates raindrops, and observes passersby intently. If something is going to pose a threat to Dave and his kingdom, he wants to know about it as soon as possible. He subscribes to a Mad-Eye Moody style of "constant vigilance!" He has just seen and experienced too much to be complacent, and his vigilance has prepared him well for many potentially dangerous situations. For example, his recent encounter with an ice cream truck occurred when Dave was looking out the window. Who knows what could have happened if Dave had been caught unawares?

Dave's encounter with an ice cream truck

Dave is a cat of simple pleasures. He likes to have plentiful food available, likes to receive headrubs, and most of all, just wants to be able to take a nap without being disturbed. He remembers his days as an alley cat, when it wasn't so easy to nap as freely as he does now. That's why he takes napping so seriously.

Below, you can see Dave's reaction to an approaching ice cream truck. As you can see, he was quite alarmed. And who can blame him? There was no way of knowing whether the ice cream truck was a legitimate business, or something more sinister. Dave doesn't like to talk about his experiences growing up on the mean streets of Iowa, so we can never really know what he has seen ice cream trucks do. But by the look of those eyes, it was nothing good...
