Jabba the Dave, Volume II

Below you can see another occurrence of Jabba the Dave, among the definitive Dave poses. It's a good way for Dave to position himself when he wants to lick his belly or hind legs. As a cat, that is something he is supposed to do from time to time, and Dave has found this to be the most efficient way to do it. Dave's quest for efficiency and new ways of doing things doesn't stop with creative napping. Although we all know that napping is Dave's principal pursuit, it is important to realize that he uses his creativity in other areas of life as well. He is not just a one-trick pony. That's where this pose comes in handy.

The Urinal Strategy

Dave and Jack have different views of personal space. You can see some of things Jack has had to deal with here, here, and especially here. Dave just doesn't seem to care about his proximity to other cats. Jack, on the other hand, values his space, and would prefer that Dave not invade it. That is why Jack believes that the strategy men apply to urinal use on a daily basis should be applied to naps as well. 

What is the urinal strategy Jack refers to?  Ladies might not have experienced this as much as dudes, but it is quite simple. Here is how it works. Upon arriving at a wall of urinals, a person shall evaluate which urinals are available for use. He shall then use the urinal furthest away from any other urinals in use. No one shall use a urinal directly next to a urinal in use until all other options have been exhausted. If two gentlemen are using urinals on a wall containing 8 urinals, the ideal scenario is for the gentlemen to use urinals 1 and 8. A third gentleman could then arrive and use urinal 4 or 5. It would be completely unacceptable for the third gentleman to use urinal 2 or 7 when there are so many more appropriate options for him. This doesn't mean it is prohibited to use every urinal on the wall. If 8 gentlemen arrived simultaneously, they should certainly use all 8 urinals. Doing anything else would be childish. But until it is necessary, gentlemen should space themselves out wherever possible. 

Now, how does this apply to napping? Jack thinks cats should select napping locations that are as far away as possible to other cats' napping locations. He thinks the ideal scenario looks something like this:

Dave, while he doesn't actively seek to nap on top of Jack, doesn't particularly avoid doing so either. If he believes he has an opportunity for a great nap, he will seize it regardless of how close he will be to Jack:

That is what you need to know about the urinal strategy and how it relates to naps.

Driftwood Dave, Volume II

Here you can see another occasion when Dave resembled a piece of driftwood. Appearing more like a manatee than a cat, Dave thought he would nap like this because he wanted to imagine life on the open sea. Dave thinks he would like it out there, even if he was a piece of driftwood without much say in where his travels would take him. He isn't as averse to water as many other cats are, and we all know that he loves exploring. 

Of course, it would be a bad idea for Dave to embark on such a journey. He is, after all, a cat. He might think he can catch fish or birds to eat while on his journey at sea, but he might be a little overconfident about that. It is for Dave's own good that he be confined to his home. Sometimes that makes life tough, but it makes for a better long-term approach to life. 

Surprised Dave

Dave is ever alert. Even so, sometimes he is surprised by things. No matter how wary Dave is of his surroundings, he isn't a Supercat. He has his limitations. One of those limitations is his peripheral vision. As good as it is, he can't see the whole room at the same time. He is not a fish with eyes on either side of his head. That would be ridiculous. This means that sometimes Dave will be perusing one side of the room, watching out for good napping locations or any potential threats, and another threat could confront Dave from the other side of the room. 

In the photograph seen below, Dave thought he had been sneaked up on by some ne'er-do-well. In fact, it was merely a person with a camera, posing no threat at all to Dave. Moments after the photo was taken, Dave would appeared more relaxed, although somewhat annoyed.

Driftwood Dave

Sometimes Dave contorts his body into some weird positions, positions you wouldn't expect a cat like Dave to adopt. You see, despite Dave's girth, he has maintained his flexibility. Like most cats, he can point his different limbs every which way. Sometimes this makes Dave resemble a piece of driftwood.

Dave would enjoy a life as a piece of driftwood. You might think that weird for a cat, but those who understand Dave should not be surprised. Being a piece of driftwood would combine Dave's love of the outdoors with his love for modes of transportation. Best of both worlds. 

Blankets

Dave loves blankets. He thinks they provide a great deal of comfort. He would be right about that. For centuries, people have used blankets to great effect, and Dave thinks it's high time that cats take advantage of the immense comfort that blankets can offer. That's why Dave can so often be observed laying on blankets, whether it is as a RocketDave or while performing The Conch or being courageous. Dave encourages you to join him in his frequent use of blankets.

                          

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Such is life for Dave. That's why he looks at every spot in the house as nothing more than another place to nap. The only thing Dave can do to most things is nap on them. Bed? Nap on it. Couch? Nap on it. Pile of pillows? Nap on it. Another cat in the house? Nap on it. Dave will nap on anything.

Stealth

An excellent term to describe Dave is "stealth." Along with Dave's well-known patience, his stealth is among the most important qualities that make him such a great detective. Jack is naturally quieter than Dave, but when Dave puts his detective hat on, he is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. This is sometimes necessary in Dave's investigations, because it is important not to disrupt whatever he is investigating. Much like a good scientist tries to make as little impact as possible on whatever she is observing, Dave also tries not to impact whatever he is investigating. He wouldn't want to make any false conclusions.

Groundhog Day

Sometimes Dave wakes up in the morning and feels like he is just living the same day over and over again. On the surface, not much happens in Dave's orbit. This can make Dave melancholy. Sometimes it gives him a case of "the blues." He likes excitement, he wants to see the world, and he likes to meet new people. 

But when Dave really gets to thinking about it, he remembers that he has it good. He knows where his food is kept. He has a wide variety of comfortable places to nap. He has multiple windows to look out of. His home is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. Life is good. It takes a mature cat to fully understand this.

Dave considers napping an art form. He dedicates at least a few hours each day to creative napping. That's the kind of perseverance it takes to achieve the level of greatness that Dave has achieved. As you can see below, Dave was struck by true inspiration today, so his efforts paid off. This looks like a very comfortable napping style. But just because Dave looks comfortable now doesn't mean it was easy. Great artists like Leonardo Dave Inci make the impossible look easy.
